I was looking for a way to express different ages in the life of a woman. Gather the Rosebuds as Ye May is an installation using billowing petticoats to picture youth while the statuesque Queen embodies strength and power.
Gather the Rosebuds as Ye May
For this installation I used bolts of netting which was then hand silk screened. Other materials include dyed chiffon, rope, and clothespins. The dimensions of the work was 20 ' by 15' with theatrical lights illuminating the petticoats. Ambient light caused the skirts to change color as the day went from morning until night.
The Queen stands at almost 8' tall. She is made of industrial felt and resin. I used a chicken wire structure shaped as the dress and draped muslin to make the dress pattern. Then the pattern shapes were sewn using an industrial sewing machine. Sewn shapes then were re-draped over the chicken wire frame and the resin was applied. After the dress was dried, I painted the form with stripes.
